road Corso and to our hotel. For one short glorious month we lived in Rome. What we did and what we saw cannot be chronicledhere. Rome is too big and mighty, too great andwonderful for my humble pen. We just breathedand let the grandeur of it all sink into our souls. How I revelled in piloting Sheila through theeternal wonders of this Eternal City, in diving withher into the mysteries of the past, in wanderingtogether through the ruins of the Forum, or climb-ing the slopes of the Ptilatine. Ah ! those days inRome, flying past so cjuickly and leaving behind J59 EN ROUTE them one vast blurred memory, never to be for-gotten or eifaced, of crumbling ruins, of consecratedbuildings, of old pagan temples, their pillars tornfrom their grasp to support the roofs of Christianchurches; of great ceremonials, of simple ones, ofvast structures and of glorious tombs, of narrowalmost forgotten graves lost in the darkness of thecatacombs—all are blended together in our minds, and there held sacred. 160

CHAPTER XI A FLYING GLIMPSE OF ITALY One day we drove to Villa Adriana, leaving Romeby the Porta San Lorenzo. The dust lay thicklyupon the road and the wind behind us carried it inclouds, enveloping us till we were slaty-grey incolour, and we coughed and sneezed to try and ridourselves of its irritating presence. At Hadrians Villa the fates blessed us with anacquisition in the shape of a gentleman carrying alarge umbrella and calling himself Ze IngerlichGuide. He met us at the entrance, and presentedhis testimonials by pointing out the gold letters onhis cap. We were in no need of a guide, but heappeared so heart-broken at being told so thatSheila and Dorothy insisted on his accompanyingus. He was an Italian—a character. He had, sohe informed us, taught himself English, French, andGerman, and was justly proud of the fact; so proudwas he of his accomplishments that he steadftistlyrefused to utter a word in his native tongue, butfavoured us with his English in a long, loud, un-varied
