, theircrumbling walls a home for night birds, a prey toevery growing creeper that can find space uponthem. At the little pave village of Neumarkt we left theBrenner valley and commenced our 6300 feet climb. It was a road to delight the heart of Mercedes, aheavy gradient, wide turns, and kept in a state ofperfection ; as on the wings of the wind we werecarried up the hill, the road rising steeply in frontand receding like a stone in our rear. Across theBrenner valley we could see a white line cut in theface of the rock rising from the Kalterer Sea to thesummit 5000 feet above : it was the Mendel Passroad up which we had sped after leaving Bozen. Rounding turn after turn as the road ascendedthe hill side in easy curves we continued to rise till, about 3000 feet above the Brenner, the road passesthrough a cleft in the mountains, enters the ValFiemme, and follows high upon one side of thevalley ; below streamed the Avisio, glistening amidstscattered villages. It was late in the afternoon88

TlIK KOAD IS CTT DKKT l>l T ol TIIK SOLID KOCK)((IAI) lo I! IV A BEAUTIFUL TIROL when we reached the Nave dOro, the old inn atPredazzo, that has sheltered many famous men ofscience on their mineralogical researches. With aquick turn to the right we followed the Travign61o,a stream pouring out of a narrow valley. Againthe road commenced to climb, winding backwardsand forwards through steep green pastures and intothe resinous pines. At Paneveggio, a hotel lostamidst the thick fir woods, we stopped for tea ; thesun was threatening to disappear behind the hills aswe resumed the climb. Another thousand feet andthe road left the zone trees entering a region ofmoss-clad rocks and wild, coarse grass, climbing tillit reached the little wooden hut upon the summit, from which the view burst upon us. And what a view ! How I wish I had the powerto adequately describe its wonders. The road ranclose to the base of a rugged range of mountains :high above the road the pinnacle-like summit of theCimo
