Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1902, this Shingle-style mansion, known as Elmhurst, was designed by Frederick J. Osterling for Samuel Bloch, one of the founders of the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company. Following Bloch’s death, the house was converted into a retirement community in 1942. The house features a wooden shingle-clad exterior, a rough-hewn stone base, rough-hewn stone chimneys, a complex roofline with multiple gables featuring complex shingled arches and balconies, decorative brackets, a front porch with a hipped roof, integrated gazebo with a conical roof, doric columns on stone piers, an open pier foundation, a wooden balustrade, and a gable over the front steps, an arched front door with arched sidelights and an arched transom, one-over-one double-hung windows, an elliptical oxeye window on the second floor of the front facade above the front door, a cylindrical tower right a conical roof, and a large addition to the west, which houses the majority of residents of the assisted living facility. The house is a contributing structure in the National Road Corridor Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The house was renovated in 1997 under the direction of Peter Greer and James Kling, modernizing the interior and refacing the mid-20th Century rear addition to make it fit in with the rest of the house. The house remains in use today as a retirement home.
