| Description |
English: This is the elevator house in Mammoth Cave National Park. It goes down almost 270 feet and exits in Marion Avenue, a cave passage near the famous Snowball Dining Room. Lunches are no longer regularly served underground (except for the Wild Cave Tour). The park principally uses the elevator to allow handicapped people access to the cave system via the "Accessible Tour". In reality, anyone can take the Accessible Tour, not just those who are in wheelchairs.
The elevator is infamously finicky and has been non-operational for tourists for many years. Supposedly, a second elevator shaft is planned for the future. (accessed with park permission) |
