There is a line of recentvolcanoes, along which there are many still in action, ex-tending from South America to Alaska : then crossing to theAsiatic coast, the line continues down to the East Indies.This is the most extensive volcanic belt of the world. The greater number of the volcanoes are now found in thePacific or on the borders of this ocean. Though there aresome in the Atlantic, this ocean is comparatively free fromthem. Along the mid-Atlantic ridge there appears to be aline of volcanic action, and some of the cones are still ineruption. Iceland and Tristan da Cunha are situated onopposite ends of this line, while the Azores, Canaries, andother islands are also in the belt. Volcanoes also occur inother parts of the earth, and there is reason to think thatin some places they are present beneath the surface of theocean. Indeed, volcanic cones have been known to riseabove the sea, two instances of this being, one in the Medi-terranean and the other off the coast of Alaska. 370
