^ in.,and the total length over the buffers 20 ft. 3 in. The tractiveeffort is four tons. The second locomotive is similar to thefirst, but is considerably lighter. It carries only two 50-hpmotors, geared 1:6.25. This locomotive weighs 14.4 tons, hasa wheelbase of 5 ft. 11 in., a wheel diameter of 31^ in. anda total length over the buffers of 17 ft. to facilitate operationon short curves. The tractive effort, based on the hour ratingof the motors, is 1.87 tons. Locomotives Nos. 3 and 4 are operated on a line on whichloads of about no tons must be hauled over a maximum gradeof 2l/2 per cent. Each of these locomotives is equipped withfour 50-hp commutating pole motors, similar to those onlocomotive No. 2. The trucks are of 4 ft. 9 in. wheelbaseeach and 12 ft. 6 in. between centers. The wheels are 33^in. diameter. The total weight of each locomotive is 33.25tons, and the tractive effort 3.76 tons. Locomotives Nos. 5 and 6 are used for switching in the yard

British Direct-Current Locomotive for Colliery Service and must operate over a curve of 36-ft. radius. As a resultof the previous experiences with the other locomotives it wasconsidered advisable to retain the minimum wheelbase of4 ft. 9 in. and the wheel diameter of 23lA in-, but to adopta construction which would reduce to the lowest possiblelimit the overhang of the buffers on curves. Each locomotiveweighs 17 tons and is 27 ft. 8 in. over all. It was foundnecessary in order to obtain this weight without exceeding7 ft. 7 in. between the ends of the buffers and the center of -926 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL. (VoLXXXVli. Each part carries a150-hp commutating-pole motor and runs on fixed axles inde-pendently of the position of the other half. Each motor is ■ coupled to one of the driving axles in the ordinary way,the other axle
