Electric Power House, Livingstonia, Malawi, ca. 1894-1904
Photograph of the interior of an electric power house built in Livingstonia in Malawi. The interior of a machine room can be seen and there is a machine operator sitting amongst the machinery. Livingstonia was founded in 1894 by missionaries from the Free Church of Scotland.; This belongs to a series of Church of Scotland Foreign Missions Committee lantern slides relating to Dr Robert Laws (1851-1934) the Scottish Missionary. In 1875, inspired by David Livingstone (1813-1873), Laws travelled to Malawi and was involved in the foundation of the mission station of Livingstonia on the shores of Lake Nyasa. During the succeeding 50 years he also established a network of hundreds of schools. In 1908 Laws was elected moderator of the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
