Description CROSSING A SOUTH AFRICAN DRIFT.
"Here we have a representation of a scene familiar to every traveller in South Africa. One of the long, covered carts which convey the property of a family, and are the only means of conveyance in many districts, is being laboriously dragged by a long team of oxen through a ford or "drift" on the Eland river. These Cape waggons are sometimes longer and more imposing in their dimensions than the specimen shown in the picture, and the teams by which they are dragged are increased in measure corresponding to the burden. It is in such waggons that the Boer "treks" take place, and it is probable that this rough but roomy conveyance will hold its own upon the South African veldt for many a year, despite the advance of the railway and the gradual extension of properly metalled roads."
