Description
Escena que muestra al santo en el momento de su martirio, siendo asado en una parrilla por orden del emperador romano Valeriano (siglo III d. C.). Desde el siglo IV San Lorenzo ha sido uno de los mártires más venerados de la Iglesia Católica, y las númerosas leyendas sobre su vida y su muerte han dado lugar a confusión sobre la verdad de la historia, en la que se mezclan la tradición oral y las posteriores fuentes escritas. A pesar de ello, se afirma con certeza su condición de diácono del Papa Sixto II y su condena a muerte por proteger los bienes y archivos de la Iglesia. Valentin presenta al santo casi desnudo, sin la dalmática de diácono con la que suele representarse, y en el momento del martirio rodeado por sus verdugos y diversos espectadores. Entre ellos, cabe destacar las armaduras modernas que no corresponderían al momento histórico del santo. La técnica empleada, de fuertes e intensos claroscuros, aporta un mayor dramatismo a la composición, ya tensa por el movimiento y cruce de líneas diagonales.
