El lienzo representa el entierro del mártir San Sebastian. El emperador Maximiano mandó que lo azotaran hasta morir, y los soldados, después de matarlo, arrojaron su cuerpo a la Cloaca Máxima de Roma. Los cristianos recogieron su cadaver y lo enterraron en la Vía Apia, en las Catacumbas de San Sebastián. Murió en el año 288.
