| Description |
English: Eilean nan Gamhna. Like 1753820, Eilean nan Gamhna has a very distinctive outline caused by changes in sea level. Although sea levels rose considerably when the ice melted at the end of the last ice age, land which had been depressed under the huge weight of ice also started to rise in a process known as isostatic rebound. For a considerable period, the land in this area was lower, relative to sea level, and wave-cut platforms formed, which subsequently rose above sea level to form the characteristic level ground below cliffs and island peaks, which now form favoured nesting for spots for sea birds. |
