Wefirst secured two vessels, in which the necessary equip-ments for raising were taken, with the party who wereto assist. Two long spars and chain cables and adozen men accompanied these vessels. Found upon our arrival only the mastheads abovewater. Placed one chain under forward, the. otherunder aft, with a vessel on each side of the sunkenone. Lashed the spars across the decks of the three,took a turn of the chain around the spars, put a largeoak heaver on to turn the spars, making what sailorscall a Spanish windlass. Hove a heavy strain at deadlow water. The tide began to rise, and we-hoped thatby full sea she would be lifted clear of the rocks; ifbo, we intended to get her in a little nearer shore andrepeat the experiment. As the tide came in, sho did not appear to come up
