Les mitate étaient des représentations parodiques de légendes asiatiques célèbres. Ici, le calligraphe fameux Ono no Tôfu, représenté sous la forme d'une grenouille qui manque son but 7 fois de suite avant de réussir la huitième fois, tout comme Ono no Tôfu n'avait lui-même réussi aux examens qu'à sa huitième tentative.
