| Description |
English: Illustration of the "spillover effect" in a parabolic antenna. Some of the radiation from the feed antenna falls outside the edge of the parabolic dish and is wasted. In the three illustrations, the cardioid (dimpled) sphere is the radiation pattern of the feed antenna, which is at its center. Only the radiation within the angle subtended by the dish, the shaded sector, contributes to the main beam. It can be seen that much of the radiation from the feed is outside this shaded sector and spills over. The three drawings show the effect of increasing the focal length, or f-number, of the antenna, on spillover. For a given feed, the longer the focal length of the dish, the farther the feed antenna is from it, so the more radiation spills over.
