Text[edit]

Republican Party Founder Dies at 96. Special to The New York Times. Anacordes, Washington; June 27, 1922. Death claimed today the last survivor of a band of Wisconsin men who at Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1854, founded the Republican Party, when Edwin U. Judd died here just a month less than 97 years old. Judd was born in Lenox Furnace, Massachusetts. His father was a youthful captain of a militia company in the Revolutionary War. With his parents he moved to Wisconsin in 1840. In 1851 he was Chairman of the Free Soil Party for the First Wisconsin District, and the following year was one of the signers of the call for a convention at Madison to form a new party, having for its main principle the abolition of slavery. Woodrow Wilson, In his history, used Mr. Judd's story of the founding of the Republican Party, and recently Mr. Judd received a letter from President Harding congratulating him on his approaching 97th birthday.
