CJiosen Pictures at the Grafton Gallery never will, pass the invisible barrier which dividesthem from all that is not obvious. And so allthese painters have had to make their own publicand their own appreciators; but all latter-day criti-cism has been in their favour, as it never was infavour of revolutionists before. Their intellectualand self-conscious attitude towards their own aimscould not fail to enlist the support of writers whounderstand that attitude better than any other. But this self-consciousness has not been withoutits deleterious influence. There is not always pre-sent the art which conceals art. One of the mostadmirable pictures in the gallery is Mr. LambertsThe Shop; but the particular view of the studio,with its grouping of the figures in the canvas, isall a very consciously arranged pictorial device.Such deliberation of composition is always inkeeping with the nature of purely decorative
