Summary[edit]
DescriptionEdgware, Former Great Northern Railway branch line - geograph.org.uk - 1421285.jpg |
English: Edgware: Trackbed of the former Great Northern Railway branch line between Finchley and Edgware constructed by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway and opened in 1867.
In the 1930s the line was to be connected to and transferred to the London Underground's Northern line. It was closed in 1939 for electrification, but electrification of the section between Edgware and Mill Hill East was abandoned after World War II. The line became part of British Railways after the railways were nationalised and was used as a goods line until 1964 when it closed permanently. The trackbed east of this point and looking in this direction is now the Lyndhurst Park & Mill Hill Old Railway Local Nature Reserve, managed by the London Wildlife Trust. The Reserve is currently open to the public on Sundays between 10am and 3pm. This is a view taken looking in the opposite direction through the security fence to Hywel's 18903. |
