Description First our guide Jim showed us a rather beat-up sample of this mushroom, commonly called "Earthstar," then an eagle-eyed member of the group spotted this pristine example. The mushroom is not edible. It is saprobic, meaning it lives off of wood rot and helps to decompose and recycle vegetable matter. I think there are a few different earthstars, but I believe this one is Geastrum saccatum
