Early postmedieval sword belt hanger of gilded copper alloy |
||
Description |
English: A late medieval to early postmedieval copper alloy sword belt hanger or hooked clothing fastener. The fitting has a diamond-shaped central field, decorated in a geometric design with gilding and enamel (traces of which remain), and ornate terminals. Above this central lozenge is a hook folded over to the reverse, and below it a moulded, forward facing hook. Th object is 32.7mm high, 19.9mm wide, and 2.8mm wide. It weighs 6.9g.
Hooked fasteners and sword belt hangers were a popular form of dress accessory in the 15th and 16th centuries,and are relatively common metal detecting finds. This particular example is unusual as both of its terminals are hooked; single hooks are more common. |
