Title
Early medieval strap end
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy strap end of medieval date. It measures 41.3mm in length and 8.8mm in width (at widest point), thus having a width: length ratio of about 1:5. The back face is plain, and the front face decorated with a single central line of ring and dot motifs. Transverse (post-depositional or wear-related) 'folds' have formed on the front face, and green 'bronze disease' fills these areas. The remainder of the strapend has a deep brown patina. The strapend shares some similarities with Gabor Thomas's Class B, (Thomas 2003, 4-5), in that it has a tapering shaft, and a width:length ratio close to 1:4.5. However, it lacks evidence of a split end and, has a straight (rather than zoomorphic) terminal. Moroever, its simple ring-and-dot ornament cannot be paralleled in any of Thomas's B types, and all in all it seems more likely to be of post-conquest date. It shares some similarities with medieval strapends from London (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: pp130-159).
