Title
Early medieval coin: Penny of Coenwulf
Description
English: A silver tribrach type penny of Coenwulf, King of Mercia (AD 796-821). The Clywd–Powys Archaeological Trust believes the tribrach is supposed to represent the archiepiscopal pall, thus giving the opinion that this coin was struck at Canterbury. The central letter of the obverse may be a variant of the usual Alpha and Omega (ω) motif or a similarly styled overbar m intending Merciae ("[King] of Mercia") or Merciorum ("[King] of the Mercians").
