Title
Early medieval brooch: Frankish radiate-head brooch
Description
English: Early medieval brooch: an incomplete early medieval (6th century) continental radiate brooch. The brooch is finely cast in copper alloy, but is very worn and corroded, and covered with a fine red ferrous deposit. The semi-circular headplate features a ribbed (moulded) margin, enclosing a semi-circular fields that contains a T-shaped motif. Three small, geometric knops protrude from the head, poistioned top, right, and left. The top knop is perforated with a small hole. The bow is straight in profile and arched in section, decorated with a broad median rib and narrower marginal ribs. The foot is truncated, but has a broadly lozenge-shaped form, with two elaborate side knops. The central decorative field of the foot contains geometric ornament, unfortunately rendered unclear by corrosion. Pin missing, catchplate intact.

The brooch is 63.08mm long, and 32.28mm wide across the head. The bow is 2.22mm thick, and has a maximum depth of 16.52mm (from obverse to reverse at the centrepoint of the bow. The catchplate on the reverse of the foot is 8.16mm deep.

Similar examples are known from Norfolk (Ashley et al. 1990; Ashley and Rogerson 1992).
