Title
Early Roman trumpet-headed brooch
Description
English: Roman bow brooch: Part fo the bow from a Roman trumpet-headed brooch, dated c. AD 75-175.

The head is shaped like the bell of a trumpet and is expanded beyond its junction with the bow, forming a large projection at the apex of the head. Behind the head the spring/pin mechanism has been lost, but the space within which it sat it clearly visible. Only the upper section of the bow is preserved, as there is a truncation just below the bow's central moulding.

The upper bow is of subtriangular section, and has a double collar around it at the junction just above the central moulding. This central moulding is porly preserved, but seems to be geometric in design, consisting of wide collars, rather than exploiting acanthus or similar foliate ornament. The moulding does not extend on to the reverse of the bow.

The fragment weighs 5.69g, and measures 30mm long, 13mm across the head, and 4mm across the midpoint on the upper bow. One might assume the complete brooch to have been in the region of c.50mm long.
