Title
Early Roman Bow brooch: 1st-century dolphin brooch, probably Polden Hill mechanism
Description
English: A Romano-British dolphin brooch, possibly of the Polden Hill type. The brooch is relatively short (26.4mm), with 22.1mm wide wings housing a spring casing open at the rear. The brooch has a downwardly curving, typical dolphin style bow, which tapers gently to a blunt, rounded foot. The bow is decorated with reeding and zigzags, and there is a small stud at its apex.

The brooch could be classified as a Langton Down type, but the slight flaring at the wing terminals might relate to the 'appendages' typical of the Polden Hill spring mechanism. Similarly, a single-pierced lug is present at the brooch's head. This lug was used to scure the spring's external chord.

Polden Hill brooches are part of the dolphin bow fibula family, and date to the middle of the 1st century AD.
