Title
Early Medieval hanging bowl escutcheon
Description
English: An incomplete Early Medieval mount (escutcheon) from a hanging bowl dating to circa AD 550-700. The extant element of the mount consists of a rectangular in plan plate. Its edges are jagged indicate the break. It is convex in section. The front face is decorated with a chip-carved interlaced design. It depicts four interwoven double strands set between border grooves. Significant traces of white enamel adorn the front face. The back face is plain though faint traces of possible soldering are visible.

Hanging bowls were manufactured in west and north Britain during the later 6th and 7th centuries AD (Brenan 1991). Though their precise purpose is uncertain, elaborately decorated escutcheons were attached to the outer face of the bowl.

Length: 25.5mm; Width: 11.9mm; Thickness: 1.9mm; Weight: 3.36g.
