Title |
Early Medieval Coin: Penny of Coenwulf |
||
Description |
English: Silver penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (796-821), Group I: Substantive type, moneyer: Eoba, Canterbury mint, 796-c. 805. North no. 342 (1991, p. 92). The Clywd–Powys Archaeological Trust believes the tribrach is supposed to represent the archiepiscopal pall. The central letter may be a variant of the usual Alpha and Omega (ω) motif or a similarly styled overbar m intending Merciae ("[King] of Mercia") or Merciorum ("[King] of the Mercians"). |
