Title |
Early Medieval Strap End |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper-alloy tongue-shaped strap-end with punched, openwork and moulded decoration, outside edge missing. The split end at the attachment edge is rectangular and decorated on both faces with eight punched ring-and-dots arranged in two neat rows. Two rivets pass through two of the dots. The main part depicts a grotesque creature, to be viewed with the attachment edge uppermost. The details are in relief on the front face, with blind drilled holes for the eyes and in rounded lobes on the sides. On the reverse the creature's head and arms are mirrored by concavities. Thomas 2004 Class E Type 2, sub-type (b)iii. Dimensions of length >38mm and width 27.5mm. Dates to the 10th - 11th century. |
