Title |
Early Medieval Shield boss |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete, fragmented iron Early Medieval sheild boss. The cone of the boss is slightly concave. The wall is also concave with an overhanging carination. The boss has a complete narrow apex rod (8.43mm) which widens at the terminus to disk headed apex. This is 17.1mm in diameter and is flat topped. The flange of the boss is incomplete and therefore it is difficult to measure the exact diameter of the boss as a whole. The shield boss measures approx. 97mm in height, 152mm in diameter. The wall height is 20.14mm. The sheild boss weighs 420g.
Typologies of sheild bosses consider the measurements and shape of the boss. The measurements taken suggest that this boss is Type 1, as described in Dickinson and Harke (1992), pp.10-12. However the height of this boss measures slightly more than is usual for a Type 1 (65-91mm). Despite this difference, Type 1 is still the most promising candidate as a Type 1 subgroup Type 1.2 is the only type in which the cone of the boss is concave. In addition the shape of the apex is best fitted to Type 1. The number of flange rivets is also used to designate Type, however the majority of the flange is missing from this object. The boss appears to have been constructed using the single piece method as a weld is not visible between the cone and the wall and the thickness of the wall is consistant. Type 1 sheild bosses are relatively rare from Kent, with only 3 known at the time the typology was written. This compares with the most common type in Kent (Type 3) of which there were 16 examples. Type 1 sheild bosses are mostly found in Wessex and the Upper Thames region. Type 1.2 bosses start to appear in datable contexts from the early 5th century AD. Both types 1 and 1.2 continue to appear until the late 6th century. However the number of Type 1.2 bosses decreases from the mid 6th century. Object number KENT-55BB12 in the database is related to this object as the only surviving rivet. |
