Title
Early Medieval Hangling bowl, view from base
Description
English: An Early Medieval copper alloy hanging bowl, dating to the 6th to early-7th century. The bowl is 263mm in diameter and survives to a depth of 84mm. The base of the bowl was lost during recovery, although many small fragments of the bowl were collected by the finder. The bowl has been raised from a single sheet of copper alloy by hammering. The bent in rim remains intact as dose the majority of the wall. The upper surface of the rim is flat and is 6.1mm thick. The walls are 1.9mm thick. From the top of the rim at the narrowest it expands to the widest part of the shoulder at around 35 degrees to a depth of 12.7mm before for the walls curve back in to form the body of the bowl. The surface of the bowl is very delicate and is flaking in places. It is not possible to see if an decoration remains.
