Title
Early Medieval Hanging bowl mount
Description
English: An Early Medieval copper alloy hanging bowl hook-escutcheon, dating to the 6th to early-7th century. The mount is circular in plan with a concave profile. The circular plate is 47.5mm in diameter and 0.17mm thick. It is decorated with openwork; four pelter shaped voids creating a cruciform shape in the centre. A zooamorphic head projects from one edge of the plate. This would have projected over the side of the bowl and attached the suspension loops by which the bowl was hung. There is a raised collar between the plate above which the neck extends in head. There are three linear fields along the back of the head which are filled with white enamel, some of which is now missing. There are two rounded knops on either side of the head representing the ears. Two eyes are represented with raised pellet in a depression and there is more white enamel on both side of the pellet. An eye is placed either side of a central ridge representing the snot; the eyes are slightly off set and so are not parrall. The head terminates in a flat snout. The head is 17.1mm high and 25.3mm long. It is 10.9mm wide and 6.1mm thick. The total object weighs 44.33 grams. Similar on database: NMS-450EF2
