Title
Early-medieval coin: Penny of Coenwulf of Mercia
Description
English: A slightly damaged late-8th or early-9th-century silver early medieval penny of Coenwulf of Mercia (r. 796–821), Group 1, Substantive type, struck the moneyer Duda or Dudda at the Canterbury mint (fl. 796–805; North 342; Cn. 5-22; BMC 93). The central letter on the obverse may be a variant of the more common Alpha and Omega (ω) insignia or a similarly styled inverted overbar m intending to abbreviate Merciae ("[King] of Mercia]") or Mercianorum ("[King] of the Mercians"). The Clywd–Powys Archaeological Trust believes the tribrach on the reverse is supposed to represent the archiepiscopal pall.

The coin has suffered some small losses and fracturing at its circumference and is now incomplete.
