Title
Early-Medieval strap-end
Description
English: Middle/ Late Early-Medieval copper alloy strap-end, slightly bent across the horizontal. It measures 41.7x(max)10.8x3mm and weighs 4.65g. The form of the strap end is unusual in that there is no means of attachment to the strap, and it probably had a backplate. To the front, although much of the patina is missing, there is a wide groove running longitudinally from the wider end where a patch of cross hatching remains to just above the zoomorphic terminal which has a squared snout and ever so slightly prominent eyes at the edges. The reverse is flat around the edge with a hollowed area at the centre. I could find no parallel for the object, but Dr Steven Ashby (Northants FLO) is in agreement it is a strap end.
