DescriptionEagles at Alert Bay and Eagles Fishing (3746068383).jpg |
Alert Bay is on Cormorant Island, not far from Port McNeill on the east coast of northern Vancouver Island. Cormorant Island is the home of the 'Namgis First Nation, which belongs to the Kwakwaka'wakw group, formerly known as the Kwakiutl. Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) were the Bird of the Day when we traveled from Greenway Sound to Alert Bay. It was a treat to see this pair of Bald Eagles perched on a piling on the Alert Bay waterfront. Photos of Eagles Fishing But one of the peak experiences of the summer was coming across a large group of Bald Eagles - at least ten - fishing in the turbulent waters off Malcolm Island near Cormorant Island, where powerful tidal forces must have been driving fish to the surface. The fishing must have been good: the seagulls who ordinarily would have been harassing the Bald Eagles while the eagles were trying to fish were off fishing several hundred yards away and not bothering the eagles at all. So, the caption says "Eagles Fishing," yet unless the two eagles on the piling are tending lines with hooks (they're not), where the heck are the fishing eagles? Well, my photos of the Bald Eagle fishing derby didn't turn out well enough to post to flickr. However, our friend John, who was traveling with us and is a much more accomplished and knowledgeable photographer than I am, captured an amazing series of photos that anyone interested in wildlife generally and Bald Eagles in particular should not miss. I didn't want to post John's photos in my photostream, since I didn't take them. But, before you leave this photo, you owe it to yourself to visit John's flickr photostream to view some of the most amazing bird photos I've had to good fortune to see. For example, you'll see an eagle soaring away from the water with a fish in each talon. In another photo, there's an eagle holding a fish in a talon and reaching down to eat it - while flying! All you have to do is go to John's flickr photostream at www.flickr.com/photos/7483568@N06/ John has given me permission to include this link to his photostream for the benefit of my viewers. I promise you won't be disappointed. |
