Работа по созданию датчиков окончания срока службы противогазных фильтров проводится Национальным институтом охраны труда (NIOSH) из-за того, что вычислить срок службы фильтра иногда сложно - из-за плохо предсказуемых условий работы, а пассивных индикаторов ESLI для противогазных фильтров "пары органических соединений" нет. Замена фильтров при появлении запаха под маской основана на субъективной реакции органов чувств рабочего, ненадёжна, и с 1996г в США запрещена.
