| Description |
English: Strong winds have carried pulses of Saharan dust over the North African coast and the Mediterranean Sea since the start of November 2023. While skies were mostly dust-free on October 31, southeasterly winds from a frontal system kicked up dust from Algeria and Tunisia. By November 3, substantial dust was also lifted from western Libya.
On November 5, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of an exceptionally dusty day, when Saharan dust reached southern Italy, western and southern Greece – including the island of Crete, and approached parts of Turkey. Most of Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya is desert or semi-desert and provides a steady supply of dust and sand. Hot, dry, dust-laden winds in the spring and fall can last for days, and dust storms are one of the most frequent natural hazards in the region. |
