| Description |
English: Durlston Bay from Durlston Castle Looking out across the bay from the viewpoint immediately to the east of Durlston Castle. From Durlston Head to Peveril Point (on the far side of the bay) the cliffs are of northwards dipping Purbeck limestone strata, with a fault in the middle of the bay. Durlston Head sits on Portland Stone and Peveril Point is of Upper Purbeck Marble - the softer Middle and Lower Purbeck limestone has been scooped out to form a modest bay. Beyond Peveril Point is the much larger Swanage Bay, scooped out of the significantly softer Wealden strata. In the distance at the northern end of Swanage Bay the chalk of Ballard Point is exposed. |
