When the detonator is an electric fuze theprimer is made exactly the same way, but no fuse is used, the electricwires already sealed in the copper cap taking its place. When a half cartridge is enough for the charge, each end ofthe whole cartridge should be primed as described above and it shouldthen be cut in two in the middle with a case knife, not with a foldingpocket knife. This does not mean that a charge of half a cartridgeshould be primed at both ends, but simply that in preparing twocharges of a half cartridge each, it is better to do the priming for bothcharges before cutting the cartridge in two. CHARGING Having primed the cartridge in the manner described, insert itin the bore hole and push it carefully home. Putting the explosiveinto the bore hole is called charging or loading the bore hole. It issometimes well in dry ground to slit the paper shells lengthwise on oneor two sides with a sharp knife before putting the cartridges into the 13

EXPLODING DYNAMITE bore hole, as a slit cartridge will spread out in the bore hole better.The primer should not be slit. Push the cartridges, except the primercartridge, firmly into place with a wooden stick so that they willexpand and fill up the diameter of the hole, for crevices or air spacesgreatly lessen the power of an explosive. The primer is loaded lastand is pushed down only hard enough to be sure that it touches thepreceding cartridge. Each cartridge must touch the one previouslyloaded, for if any space between the cartridges occurs through fallingdirt or stones, or through the sticking of a cartridge in the bore hole, apart of the charge may fail to explode. TAMPING After the charge is pressed home, as directed, put in two orthree inches of fine dirt or sand, and with a wooden stick press itgently on top of the dynamite.
