Description
The central panel shows a Christ on the Cross with the Virgin Mary on the left and Saint John on the right. The skull and bone on the ground refer not only to Golgotha (The Place of the Skull), where the Crucifixion took place, but also to Adam, who was supposedly buried there. On the background the outlines of the city of Utrecht. The inner left wing shows a Mass of Saint Gregory; the inner right wing a Saint Christopher carrying the Christ child. The exterior shows an Annunciation with the angel to the left and the Virgin Mary to the right, depicted as statues on pedestals underneath canopies. See
