Text[edit]

Wife to Bail Physician Held in "Mustard Mystery". Her Stepfather Also Died Suddenly While Outlining Terms of New Will. Special Correspondence. Markesan, Wisconsin; January 13, 1920. Mrs. Gladys Markham Freudenberg, whose husband, Dr. J. A. Freudenberg, is accused of having poisoned his mother-in-law, Mrs. Nettie Duffies, with a mustard solution, went to Greenlake to day, carrying $30,000 with which to free the doctor on bail. Dr. Freudenberg was arrested yesterday following the discovery of alleged evidence, according to District Attorney Paul, tending j to show Dr. Freudenberg had brought about Mrs. Duffies's death to prevent her marrying a third time, and that I the physician had purchased mustard. A new angle developed in the "mustard mystery" almost simultaneously with news that bail had been set when it became known that Alfred Duffies, Mrs. Freudenberg's stepfather, had outlined terms of a new will shortly before he died, and that death overtook him before the document was formally crafted and signed. Plans have been laid for exhuming the body of Alfred Duffies and investigation of the death of three other members of the Duffies family in the last five years is being made.
