For this view, the photographer stood atop a building situated between Western Avenue and Post Alley. The impressive structure in the right background is the Denny (later Washington) Hotel. Seattle Hardware Company at 819-823 First Avenue is in the Colman Building on teh right. Railroad Avenue is visible on the left; the smoke appears to be coming from one of the stacks near the waterfront.
