The Gate of Athena Archegetis (11 BC) in Ottoman Athens in 1751

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Αt the center, the Gate of Athena Archegetis (Πύλη τῆς Ἀθηνᾶς Ἀρχηγέτιδος), built in 11 BC on the west side of the Roman Agora of Athens and considered to be the second most prominent remain in the site after the Tower of the Winds:

On the left, the house of the French Consul Etienne Leosson (1751) and a fountain bearing his initials (E.L.) in recognition of his financial contribution to building the fountain. Outside the Consul's house, three people are talking (sitting): from left to right, a Turkish official (probably the voyvoda or governor of Athens), a French (probably the Consul) and a Greek merchant or privileged landlord (κοτσάμπασης). At the fountain, a Greek lady waits patiently, in fearless posture, to fill up her pitchers with water after the equestrian armed Turk (Janissary) completes watering his horse.
