Donald Abel, 57, Prominent Resident, Dies. Bay friends are donating to the Heart fund in memory of Donald Abel, 57, summer resident of the Bay in Loch Vista for 35 years, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage recently in Park Ridge, Illinois. Funeral services were conducted August 6 by Rev. Gilbert LaMar. Burial was at Oak Ridge cemetery, Park Ridge. Abel was well known in the Bay area, especially for his activities in Belfry theatre, where he was a life member and acted in several plays. He was a member of the Community church in Fontana. In Chicago, Abel owned a medical laboratory at State and Madison streets, where he was engaged in business since 1918. The firm was founded by his father in 1902 at that location. In World War I. Born in Chicago, he was a graduate of the University of Chicago and a post-graduate at Northwestern University. He married the former Sigrid Jensen in Chicago in 1920. He served in a tank division under Dwight D. Eisenhower in World War I. A man of diverse interests, Abel held many titles. He was, at various times second president of the Chicago Junior Chamber of Commerce, executive vice president of the National Chamber of Commerce, charter president of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, city, state and national president of the Council of American Biologists, post commander of the Riverside unit of American Legion and president of the Chicago Chess club. He was also a life member of the Oriental Institute of Chicago. He is survived by his wife, one son, Robert; and two grandchildren, Donald and Victrice. His grandson, Donald, is the son of Lt. Donald Abel, Jr., who was lost in World War II when his submarine was sunk in the Japanese sea.
