Text Appearing Before Image:
XXVII. THE GKEYHOUND. For finest traits and a great careerThe noble greyhound has no peer;He walks the earth with a delicate treadAnd sinewy form, holding high his head. IN PROSE AND RHYME. 73
Text Appearing After Image:
XXVIII. LOBD BYROXS DOG — BOATSWAIN. History is rich in accounts of great men and womenwho loved dogs and treated them with kindness andregard. Among writers of the past century, Lord Byronwill be remembered for his immortal poem on Boatswain, his favorite dog. When Byron was in his twentieth year, his favoriteNewfoundland died. The poet buried Boatswain in avault, and had engraved upon it, the following epitaph: Xear this spot Are deposited the remains of one Who possessed beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, And all the Virtues of Man without his Vices. 74 DOGS OF ALL NATIONS This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery If inscribed over human ashes, Is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog. In addition to perpetuating the noble character of thedog in stone, the great poet immortalized him in verse—one of the most beautiful ever composed on the virtuesof mans best friend, the dog: When some proud son of man returns to earth
