He is smoothcoated, prick-eared and black and tanin color, weighing in the neighborhoodof thirty-live to forty pounds. He isvery intelligent and is as easily taughtto perform the duties of an all-roundVarmint dog as any breed in ex-istence. As a police dog he is said tobe even more readily trained than thebreed which is supposed to be a spe-cialist in that sphere — namely theshepherd dog — until lately known asthe German or Belgian shepherd dog. While on the subject of the latterbreed, it might be said in passing, thatthis dog is gaining in popularity eachyear. He is said to be intelligent, infact he is easily trained, but here alsois a breed which is somewhat uncer-tain in temper despite the stories tothe contrary. As a watch dog he can-not be surpassed.
