PORTER, GEORGE D.. Dirctor of Public Safety for the City of Philadelphia, was born at Vinton,Iowa, September 8, 1875. His parents were Pennsylvanians; his father had served in the 197th Pa.Vol. Reg. in the Civil War. and his grandfather, from Lancaster county, in the Revolutionary War.Before coming to Philadelphia Mr. Porter was a bookkeeper in a bank at Tallapoosa, Ga., and aftercoming here was associated with Eli K. Price, a lawyer, in the management of estates. He enteredmunicipal politics in 1900 and in 1906 was sent to councils to fill an unexpired term of W. K. Brown.He was one of the leaders of the Municipal League in the Twenty-second Ward and in the City Party,which nearly was successful in the municipal election of 1907. In all municipal affars Mr. Porterhas fought machine rule and has taken the side of the people where public service corporations wereconcerned. He is a member of the Penna. Historical Society, S. A.
