e evidence of the disorderis the presence of the enteroptotic habitus. The epigastric angle isabnormally sharp. The writer has made it a routine to measure thecostal angle in every case, and finds that when the ribs part at a moreacute angle than 50 degrees to 55 degrees the atonic and neurasthenicdefects of the enteroptotic habitus are almost invariably present, eventhough an actual descent of the stomach may not be extreme. Thedistance between the ensiform cartilage is greater than the horizontalmeasurement from the umbilicus to the costal arch. It has been attempted to calculate the capacity of the thoracic PHYSICAL SIGNS OF GASTROPTOSIS 439 abdomen and to express the result in figures. The jugulo-pubic indexof Becker and Lenhoff is determined as follows: The measurementfrom the suprasternal notch to the upper border of the symphysispubis is divided by the circumference of the waist line at its point ofgreatest constriction and the result is multiplied by 100. If the figure Fig. 85

Enteroptotic habitus. thus obtained equals or exceeds 77, the individual belongs to the entero-ptotic group. In general Becker and Lenhoffs index works true, butseems to the author to possess no advantage over the simpler methodof determining the epigastric angle. The patient is slender and has but slight adipose tissue. The musclesare underdeveloped and there is a tendency on standing toward a 440 CASTROPTOSIS bulging fold of the lower ))ortion of the abdominal wall. This, however, may not be apparent in young subjects who have not borne children. The chest is shallow, the upper ribs are far apart, the lower slantingmore in a downward direction than can be observed in normal cases. These characteristics become more and more apparent during the growth Vie.
