The Crawford & Harrington store, Seattle's first "fireproof" building, was built by Dexter Horton in 1868 for merchants Atkins & Shoudy, who would sell to Portland businessmen Crawford & Harrington in 1870. (James A. Shoudy of the selling party would go on to found Ellensburg the following year) Known as the brick store, it would later be remodeled with a more robust stone facade to match the bank's. Crawford & Harrington would later be known as Harrington & Smith, and would build the still existing building directly behind the bank after the fire.
