Summary[edit]

Description
Deutsch: Deutsche Lufthansa, Postkarte/Ansichtskarte/Werbekarte/Propagandakarte (Plakat) von Illustrator und Plakatkünstler Ludwig Hohlwein (1874–1949), München. Otto-Lilienthal-Denkmal (Ikarus, der fliegende Mensch); Olympische Ringe; Brandenburger Tor; Junkers Ju 52.
  • Die Olympischen Sommerspiele 1936 wurden vom 1. bis 16. August 1936 in Berlin ausgetragen.
  • Auch schon vor Hitlers Machtergreifung arbeitete Ludwig Hohlwein für die NSDAP und prägte in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus das visuelle Erscheinungsbild des Dritten Reiches.

English: Advertising postcard for the Deutsche Lufthansa in 1936.
  • Painting by the prolific commerical illustrator and poster artist Ludwig Hohlwein (1874–1949), Munich. Poster illustration for German airlines promoting the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Nazi Germany.
  • A mythological Icarus like winged man in the foreground symbolizes the airline, German victory in the Olympic Games, and the triumph of the Nazi movement. The figure is based on a 1914 statue of German aviator Otto Lilienthal, a pioneer of early aviation who was known as the "Glider King." Here the statue is shown with a laurel wreath to signify the games.
  • A Junkers JU 52 flying low over the Olympic flag and Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. Note the partially obscured swastika on the tailfin of the aircraft.
  • The postcard/poster is not an official Olympic poster, but uses the Olympic Games to advertise Germany's national airline as a means of traveling to the competition.
