Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Detail of Kurdistan from a British map of administrative divisions in the Ottoman Empire. The letters of the label "kurdistan" run through the Ottoman vilayets (provinces) of Aleppo, Mamuret ul-Aziz, Diyarbekir, Bitlis, Van, and Mosul, and extend beyond Ottoman Kurdistan across the border into the Qajar Empire. The map is derived from the works of the cartographer-brothers Sir William Johnston (1802–1888, Lord Provost of Edinburgh) and Alexander Keith Johnston (1804–1871, Geographer-Royal for Scotland), published in Edinburgh under the name "W. and A. K. Johnston".
