Summary[edit]
DescriptionDetail, Ethiopian Crown - Treasury Of The Chapel Of The Tablet (2851565985).jpg |
The diamond-shaped piece atop the crown appears to be a fragment of fabric or preserved skin with stitching encased behind glass. I assume it is a relic; I'd love to know more about it. Now that I think about it, I wonder whether the miniature casket with the painting in the center is also a reliquary. If so, what's in it? Unless I'm mistaken, the jewel-colored rectangles on the tier below the casket are actually empty sockets, surrounded by bezels, whose bases have been painted in bright colors. Clear glass would have been set into the bezels, and the appearance would have been that of precious stones. Another possibility is they are deep-set colored stones surrounded by a relatively tall rim. It would be like building a bezel on a ring to hold a protruding stone but then setting the stone flush with the surface of the ring. In any case, it is a beautiful and intriguing piece of workmanship. |
